Forbes Hall Library
The Forbes Hall library collection includes over 3300 Print Materials and is comprised of a wide range of fiction (mysteries, historical, renowned contemporary authors). The smaller non-fiction segment ranges across natural history, travel, biography/autobiography, health/nutrition, history and hobbies. The collection also holds 900 DVDs including a wide range of films and series.
There is also a children's section with many wonderful books and DVDs.
The library is very much a community library. Thetis Islanders are invited to visit the library to peruse the stacks or catalogue. The library is open whenever the hall is open, after 10 am. A group of volunteers known as Friends of the Library ensure that the library is open and attended for 3 hours each Saturday and Sunday. Additional open hours and activities will be accommodated as volunteers are available. Contact library@forbeshall.ca if you have questions.
The Forbes Hall Library was initiated in the early 1990s with the assistance of a New Horizons grant. The shelving was originally built by Ken Bolster and has been added to and reconfigured by Ron Bannister, Bill Dickie and Ron Vandergaag following the recent renovation. To date, there have been five volunteer librarians: Ruth Ferguson, Shirley Thompson, Rosemary Boehringer, Sandy Alexander, and currently Celine Valestrand, who has served since 2013. On-going funding has been raised through our annual book and bake sale which takes place each August on the long weekend.
Catalogue Link takes you to our online catalogue via LibraryThing.
Islanders can borrow items by legibly signing and dating the book’s catalogue card and leaving it alphabetized by title in the provided box at the checkout counter.
If there is no card, sign out the item in the lined notebook at the counter.
While borrowing is allowed for an unspecified period, people are asked to be respectful of others who may be seeking to enjoy the same titles that are borrowed. The librarian is interested in new titles to add to the collection, should you have a title to suggest, contact them at library@forbeshall.ca or mention it to the on-duty Friend of the Library.
Books and DVDs can be returned by either leaving them in the exterior Drop Box by the Court-side Entrance (in the alcove) or on the check-out counter.
If the item does not have a card, please cross off your entry in the notebook when you return the item. Enjoy our lovely little island library!
