Volunteering at Forbes Hall
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Forbes Hall Community Centre and Thetis Island. Their work for the hall and all the other Thetis volunteer organizations has defined Thetis as a self-sufficient, generous, and dedicated community.
If you have time to share and want to volunteer at Forbes Hall Community Centre, or the Thetis Island Community Association (TICA) which owns, maintains, and operates Forbes Hall, please get in touch info@forbeshall.ca
An hour or so every week or month or more frequently, all have a place. Whether you’re thinking of joining a particular committee, working in the gardens, helping with events and meetings, participating in a work-party, or even putting your name forward for the Board of Directors, all are needed!
Work Parties
Once or twice a year there are work party call outs. A time for volunteers to gather for a few hours and get the hall and/or grounds ship shape with grounds work, gutter-cleaning, decks & furnishings cleaned, window washing, screens up or down, and detail cleaning of the rooms. These are fun days, usually supported with a yummy, social lunch.
Events
Volunteer at an Event! TICA holds several events each year. If you hear about one coming up, and want to help, it’s a great way to get your feet wet in our volunteer pool! Just get in touch with the organizer or using the contact email provided.
Every event requires some work at setting out chairs, and frequently tables. At the end of the event, all need to be put away in an orderly fashion, floors swept, garbage tidied and so on, making the hall ready for the next users. If you see an event is being planned, this is an important role for volunteers, and we encourage you to let organizers know that you’ll help if able. If you attend a meeting or event, please stay a few minutes to help get this done. This is how it’s been done at Forbes Hall since it opened in 1987.
Food Services
Food and Event Services leads the Soup’s On program (started in Fall 2008) a wonderful community lunch of soup, bread, home-made treats with coffee and tea service. Soup’s On occurs Wednesdays from mid-Fall through into April each year. Its success has been built on the tremendous dedication of the program by a large group of people. Each week, a different team looks after the lunch. If you’d like to join the program, please contact foodservices@forbeshall.ca
Food & Event Services supports many other volunteer community functions held at Forbes Hall with meals or snacks. The group also assists with the production of an event especially if food is part of the plan. Lead cooks, prep cooks, home-made treat makers, coffee and tea makers, dishwashers, servers, decorators, set up and take down. No professional experience required.
Library Attendant
Two or three times a week (depending on the season) the library is “open with an attendant”, these attendants are affectionately known as Friends of the Library. Their job is to open the hall, and to be in the library to answer questions, listen to ideas, and share in conversations about books and other topics.
On Sundays the attendant prepares tea, coffee and treats for a more social encounter.
